Abstract

The main issue of the present thesis was to examine the mastery of French connectives by non-native speakers. More specifically, we focused on linguistic and cognitive factors that influence the mastery of L2 connectives, such as the type of coherence relation, the frequency of a connective or the presence of a connective in the learner's L1 that shares the same function as an L2 connective. In order examine these factors, we conducted ten experiments, which are presented in Chapters 4 to 9. Our results allow us to make the following four observations: 1. Connectives have different degrees of complexity for learners. 2. The reasons why some connectives are difficult in L2 are multifactorial, and emerge from interactions between these factors. 3. The mastery with connectives in L2 can be predicted by exposure to print and by the learner's linguistic competence. 4. The mastery also depends on the type of knowledge the learner can access. The contribution of this thesis lies not only in the novelty of these findings, but also in the fact that these conclusions have been drawn through systematic experimental evaluation. Our experimental approach has enabled us to supplement the observations made in corpus studies and to highlight the significance of the variety of connectives for their mastery in L2.
