Abstract

This work proposes to study the structural phenomena taking place in the repertoire of French songs published between 1528 and 1552. The analysis focuses both on a representative corpus of works from this period and on specific publications that reflect the dynamics of the music market. The study starts with structural markers linked to previous generations, then establishes a formal tripartite typology, before questioning the notion of ‘freedom of writing’. The study shows that the chanson nouvelle, on the one hand, corresponds to structural similarities, but on the other hand is characterized by great flexibility, which in turn is in line with the history of ideas of the French Renaissance.
