Abstract

Various studies have shown that children prefer pop music and tend to reject unfamiliar music as they grow older. These open-earedness studies often use one-dimensional scales, such as smiley face scales, to collect overall ratings of music samples. Based on these studies, this dissertation project considers certain objectives of music education and examines the age at which negative attitudes towards unfamiliar genres emerge. Additionally, the extent to which cultural context influences the perception of unfamiliar music was investigated. A qualitative preliminary study with children was conducted to develop items for the multidimensional assessment of music samples. Subsequently, 85 children aged eight to 15 years rated seven music samples from different genres using a mixed-methods online questionnaire. Half of the participants received contextual information about the music samples before listening to them, while the other half did not. The aim was to determine the extent to which children aged eight and over could discriminate, and to what extent contextual information influenced their musical judgements. The study found that children and adolescents judge different aspects of a music sample independently and experience ambivalence. Contextualising music samples led to certain changes in perception. Based on these findings, several strategies have been developed to support the teaching of music from different genres and cultures in music classes.
