Abstract

Prosumption denotes the co-production and consumption of food. This cumulative dissertation examines communal agricultural prosumption (CAP) in Switzerland to identify how it can be strengthened. Findings from three studies on Allotment Gardens, Community Gardens and Community Supported Agriculture show that accessible, flexible organisation, meaningful participation, and clear communication of nutritional and environmental benefits increase uptake and continuity of these activities. Policy should therefore recognise CAP’s public value, lower administrative barriers, and support spaces, networks and learning. Together these measures can enhance CAP’s resilience, broaden membership, and contribute to sustainable, socially embedded alternative food systems.
