Abstract

Lumbosacral stenosis (LSS) and hip dysplasia (HD) are among the most frequent disorders in dogs causing hind limb lameness. The objective of this study was to investigate a potential association between both pathologies using computed tomography-based parameters. In total, 73 dogs of various breeds with diagnosed LSS were retrospectively evaluated. Metrics analysed included the Dorsal Acetabular Rim Angle (DARA), the Lateral Center Edge Angle (LCEA), the Center Distance Index (CD), as well as the presence of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LTV), and a modified parameter to assess compression of the cauda equina (FCR), defined as the ratio of epidural fat tissue to the area of the vertebral canal. In addition, the degree of disc protrusion at L7–S1, the configuration of the dorsal lamina of S1, facet joints, neuroforamina and the nerve roots of the cauda equina were assessed. The results of regression and correlation analysis, as well as group comparison showed no significant association (p < 0,05) between lumbosacral stenosis and hip dysplasia, suggesting that these are two independent conditions.
