Abstract
This paper throws up the question what kind of therapist characteristics, which are soon established in Master of Science Psychologists before beginning the postgraduate professional education, affect therapeutic outcome. Data was collected by using multidimensional methods so as questionnaires, roleplays, rating technique, tasks to measure reaction time and interview techniques in the repertory grid technique. To measure therapeutic outcome, a composite item was used, which can show the complexity of the therapeutic process and effects (Grawe, Caspar & Ambühl, 1990; Flückiger et al., 2007). The basis for this research is the theoretical and empirical background of Grawe (1994;2000) and Henry and Strupp (1994) so as well Beutler et al. (1994) and Beutler et al. (2004). With 76 novices who were up to start the postgraduate education of the University of Bern to become a psychotherapist, predata was collected from the cohorts 2008 to 2013. These therapists attend to 358 clients over their practice. Unfortunately, according to missing data, there could be calculated a value for therapeutic outcome only for N=104. Within this data multiple correlations were found between the therapeutic characteristics. The first regression model was calculated by backward regression from therapeutic outcome to the therapeutic characteristic before postgraduate education. A significant model with R²Korr=0.46 and the variables “FAMOS_education” and “INK_enjoy life” appeared without a specific significant influence of the model factors. So, in further exploration two different factor analyses were calculated to find specific influence of pre-characteristics on the therapeutic outcome. The first factor analysis, based on the “therapeutic outcome”, lead to four specific factors of therapeutic outcome. To include more correlated data of the composite item and to check the possibility to explain more variance of therapeutic outcome, a second and independent factor analysis was calculated which lead to five factors of therapeutic outcome. 11.28% % of the variance in therapeutic outcome is explained by using the first factor analysis. 12.8% of the variance in therapeutic outcome is explained by using the second factor analysis. The second factor analysis may have advantages, by researches of therapeutic characteristics because five factors increase the possibility to explain the variance of therapeutic outcome from 58.725% by four factors to 70.976% by five factors. Afterwards there were calculated single linear backward regressions from each factor to the therapist characteristics which correlated previously with the given factor. The results show that in the two factor analyses flexibility to react on patient’s needs, social perception and the motive of education show a relation in a positive direction with the depended variable. But there are also differences. The first factor analysis reveals four factors: “harm reduction”, “personality development”, “explicit change” and “therapeutic process”. The second factor analysis shows five factors: “Wellbeing/congruence”, “therapeutic process and progress”, “psychological and physical pain”, “motives” and “explicit change”. Another difference between these two analyses is that within the first analysis, the factor “personality development” is related not only by the motive of education but also by the “positivity and congruence” of the therapist. Instead of this in the second analysis the characteristic “altruism”. Besides there is modulation of the ability to create therapeutic relationship, so as well self-consciousness. Afterwards the results and possible impacts on the postgraduate education of psychologists are discussed. In conclusion there are given ideas for further research.
